Bouteflika speaks on Islamic Salvation Front's political work
Algeria, Politics, 9/23/1999
President Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria said that the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) will not resume political work in Algeria.
In his dialogue with the Arabic department of the BBC in New York received by Cairo, the Algeria president said, "I will not repeat what happened in 1992, but I will drive Algeria towards the new millennium."
He also tackled a number of international, regional, and local issues. Then he said the leaders of the FIS will practice their rights in light of the law so that civil society allows him to take all measures to protect the country.
He added that FIS leader Abass Madani agreed upon the disarmament, but another FIS leader, Ali Benhadj, still refused it as illogical.
