Arafat and the Palestinian state
Palestine-USA, Politics, 9/23/1999

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat said that the declaration of the Palestinian state will be made next year. He indicated that postponing the declaration of this Palestinian state came at the request of the US and friendly states so this declaration of a state "will not be missinvested during the Israeli elections which were held on May 17 this year."

In a televised statement to Palestinian television before he left for the US, Arafat added that the final status negotiations will start at the beginning of October.

He continued that the meeting held several days ago in the Erez district on the border of the Gaza Strip between the Palestinian delegation and Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy is the best evidence of that.

Arafat indicated that discussing the declaration of the Palestinian state will be an integrated part of his meeting with the US President Bill Clinton today.
