Lebanese clergy confers with US ambassador
Lebanon-USA, Politics, 9/23/1999

The chairman of the Higher Shiite Council in Lebanon ,Sheikh Muhammad Mahdi Shamseddine, on Wednesday in Beirut received the US ambassador to Lebanon, David Satterfield. Talks dealt with developments in the Middle East peace process and bilateral relations between Lebanon and the US.

Replying to a question on his meeting with Lebanese men of religion, the US ambassador said these meetings permit "us to share our thoughts and ideas concerning development on the peace track in the region."

Satterfield added that these developments are clear for all and are pertaining to the possibility of reaching a just and durable peace, which means a better future for Lebanon and the Lebanese and for other peoples in the region.

He indicated the usefulness of benefiting from views of these religious "references" on matters relating to Lebanon and the region and described his meeting with Sheikh Shamseddine as "very good as has always been."
