Commander of the US Sixth Fleet to visit Algeria
Algeria-USA, Politics, 9/23/1999

The Algerian daily al-Khabar said on Wednesday that the commander of the US Sixth Fleet, Vice Admiral Daniel Murphy, will make a three-day visit Algeria next week on board of his ship, the USS Mount Whitney.

Official Algerian sources depicted this visit as being very important to US - Algerian military relations, and the sources did not rule out a meeting between Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and the US official.

The paper added that well-informed Algerian sources considered this visit to be very important, falling in the course of listing Algeria among the new security group which has been adopted according to decisions of the Washington meeting held last April.

The paper continued that the visit comes at a time when the Northrop Grumman Corporation, specializing in sensitive electronics, has recently said it will enter the Algerian market and enlarge the scale of its activities this year.

During his recent visit to Algeria, US Undersecretary of State for Middle East and North African Affairs Martin Indyk announced the US backing for the "democratic track "in Algeria.

Al-Khabar added that the visit comes within Algeria's joining the new security system according to the new strategy NATO adopted according to the decision of its Washington meeting in April 1999, based on the decision of the Rand institution, which called the alliance to include Algeria in the partnership mechanism between NATO and the Middle Eastern countries as well as expanding the range of NATO's desire to include Africa.
