Morocco, member of the governing board of universal postal union

Morocco has been elected member of the governing board of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during the union's 22nd congress held in Beijing, China, August 23 through September 15.

Morocco has also been elected member of the postal exploitation council and of the high level group in charge of studying the union's new structures, a statement by the Moroccan secretariat of state in charge of postal services and information technologies said.

The congress, that was attended by some 2000 delegates from 178 countries, discussed the restructuring of the union in order to take up the challenges of the new millennium, the new postal strategy for the 2000-2004 period, and the adoption of a new system for reciprocal payments between administrations in matters of postal distribution.

The union's coming congress will be held in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire in year 2004.

On the sidelines of the congress, Morocco and Italy signed an accord on the use of the EUROGIRO system related to electronic money transfer between the two countries.

The Moroccan delegation held talks with several other participating delegations including the Chinese, the Maltese, and the Portuguese ones.
