Arab Journalists Union urges El-Bashir to intervene to stop obstructing Sudanese newspapers
Sudan, Politics, 9/22/1999
The Arab Journalists Union urged Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir to stop the decision to ban Al-Rai Al-Akhar newspaper, recently issued to punish the newspaper and its workers.
Salah El-Din Hafez, the secretary general of the union, said today that this is not the first time in which the Sudanese government has banned a newspaper through administrative procedures, as the newspaper itself was halted for a few days weeks ago with another newspaper.
He added, "It is obvious that going on in this policy does not only defame Sudan's international reputation, but it also harms its internal status and freedom of opinion."
