Opposition: Iraqi vice president escapes assassination attempt
Iraq, Politics, 9/21/1999
In Damascus, the High Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq has claimed that Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan escaped an assassination attempt at the beginning of this month outside Baghdad.
The opposition group said one of its groups ambushed the Iraqi official on September 2 and opened fire on his vehicle upon arriving back from Takrit to Baghdad.
On the other hand,a member of the political bureau of the Iraqi Communist Party, Labeid Majid, told the Lebanese daily al-Nahar that he will represent his party at the meetings to be held by the Iraqi opposition in New York.
He indicated that his participation does not mean a change in the stand of his party toward the US project to make a change of government in Iraq. He stressed that he will not take part in meetings outside the domain of the UN General Assembly.
