Oil pipeline explosion in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 9/21/1999
The secretary general of the Sudanese Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Muhammad Ali al-Toum, said that an explosion resulting from an attack took place on Monday inside an oil pipeline in Tayan city, 14 km east of Atbara, north of Khartoum and resulted in "slight damage."
The Sudanese minister added that this is a destructive act and that maintenance work will be completed today to resume the transportation of oil to the Red Sea.
The minister said the "oil exportation program will not be affected by the explosion" after Sudan started work in this program on August 30.
Canada's Talisman Energy, which operates the pipeline, referred to the explosion as a "minor incident," adding, "No disruptions to production operations or tanker liftings are anticipated."
The Sudanese news agency quoted Sudanese security forces as saying that the emblem of the national army for liberation of the opposition nation's council was found at the site of the explosion. A Sudanese political source accused the Democratic National Alliance, a coalition of the northern and southern opposition and rebel groups of being behind the explosion.
