Regional-Egypt, Culture, 9/20/1999

Morocco's experience in matters of struggle against the phenomenon of street children was studied at a regional workshop, organized in Cairo by the Arab Childhood and Development Council.

The Council shed light on the efforts made by Moroccan governmental and non-governmental organizations to face up the phenomenon.

The street children issue, which is new in Morocco, hits mainly large and medium cities, representative of the Moroccan secretariat of state in charge of social protection, family and childhood, Said Helmi, said before the Council.

The official expounded a draft national strategy to struggle against the phenomenon. He explained that the strategy revolves around several elements, mainly the teachings of Islam, the royal guidelines on childhood and the accords related to child's rights.

Helmi called for the creation of a data base and the training of executives specialized in children's integration in the society.
