King Mohammed congratulates Bouteflika over civil concord referendum
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 9/20/1999
King Mohammed VI congratulated President Abdelaziz Bouteflika over the positive vote of the Algerian people in the referendum on civil concord in neighboring Algeria.
King Mohammed VI voiced sincere wishes that "sisterly Algeria to which we vow a deep affection, will start a new phase where all potentials will be mobilized for progress, development, peace and prosperity."
The referendum, to which President Bouteflika called to establish peace and concord throughout the Algerian territory, was approved by nearly 99 percent of Algerian voters.
Algeria has been torn by extremist violence since 1992, when the authorities canceled elections that the now outlawed Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) was poised to win by a landslide majority.
The Moroccan king hoped Algeria will succeed in achieving of its objectives and the fulfillment of the aspirations of the peoples of the Great Arab Maghreb.
