First woman ambassador in Oman
Oman, Politics, 9/16/1999

Sultan Qaboos of Oman on Wednesday released a decree according to which he appointed Khadeija Bin Hassan Bin Salman al-Lawati as an ambassador for the country, marking the appointment of a woman to such a post for the first time in the history of the sultanate.

AFP quoted the decree as stating that al-Lawati, who was appointed as an ambassador for her country in Holland, was born in 1952, and she is a mother of four children, received her B. A. in English literature from Baghdad University in 1974 and joined Oman's Foreign Ministry in 1975.

For her part, the Omani ambassador told AFP that is its not odd to have an Omani woman acquire a high-ranking post, as she has proven her capabilities inside the country, and it is ripe time now to prove herself in the diplomatic domain.

Women in Oman have three seats at the state's council, and two seats the Parliament's Shoura council. There are three women who occupy the post of ministry secretary.
