Death of Sudanese rebel leader confirmed
Sudan, Politics, 9/16/1999
One of the rebels in southern Sudan, Kerobino Kawanin, was killed following a confrontation between warring groups in the southern part of the country. Kawanin's family confirmed his death on Wednesday.
One of Kawanin's relatives told the press that Kawanin, one of the cofounders of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army was killed last Friday.
Kawanin split from the militia in 1992, before he reconciled with the Sudanese government in April 1997. He rejoined the SPLA in 1998, but just a few months later he had disputes with the leader of the rebel group, John Garang, and he was accused of attacking the house of Garang in Kenya.
