Fighting erupts in southern Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 9/16/1999

A Sudanese military spokesman on Wednesday said that Sudanese forces deterred during the two past days an attack carried out by the southern rebel movement led by John Garang.

The spokesman added that the government is committed to the ceasefire agreement signed with Garang, but it retaliated for the attack launched by the rebels. He added that the government believes the Garang movement does not care about the safety of the people of southern Sudan or ensuring the arrival of humanitarian operations to them, adding that this is manifested in the rebels carrying out military operations despite the effectiveness of the ceasefire agreement.

Meanwhile, al-Wahda province in southern Sudan has been facing fierce confrontations between the forces of the Democratic Salvation Front and forces of Lt. Gen. Vaoleino Mateiba under exchanged accusations between the two sides over the responsibility for assassinating Lt. Gen. Karbino Kawanin.
