King Mohammed managed to sensitize society to solidarity
Morocco, Politics, 9/14/1999
King Mohammed VI managed to sensitize the Moroccan society to solidarity, Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi told the French TV5 channel on Monday.
Youssoufi recalled that King Mohammed VI conducted and supervised, when he was crown prince, several social and humanitarian operations to struggle against poverty. Youssoufi underlined the keen interest the king grants to social issues, as testified by the throne speech, wherein he spoke of these issues at length.
Youssoufi also noted that the heartfelt emotion Morocco witnessed following the demise last July 23 of King Hassan II evidenced the rank of the monarchy in Morocco and the unanimity of the people around the throne.
"I believe that the reign of the late King Hassan II was marked by several major events, especially the advent of the alternation government, which earned the trust of the national and international public opinion," Youssoufi said.
The late King Hassan II had appointed in March 1998 an alternation government, led by socialist Youssoufi and comprising seven leftist and centrist political parties.
In his interview, Youssoufi underlined that the alternation experience was initiated by the late King Hassan II on the morrow of a major national debate that showed that Morocco was in need of a new executive authority, a new representative assembly.
A 1996 constitutional amendment, overwhelmingly approved by a popular referendum, set up in Morocco a bicameral parliament and endowed the executive branch with larger prerogatives and power. The move was at the time hailed by the international community as a significant democratic breakthrough.
Youssoufi hailed the various achievements that marked the 38-year reign of the late King Hassan II, said the late king finished his reign with solutions that would help Morocco go ahead with progress, recognizing his reign as a positive one.
