Meguid Denies discussing the Arab summit in meetings of foreign ministers
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 9/14/1999
In his joint press conference with the head of the current session of the Arab League council on the level of the Arab foreign ministers, Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Said al-Sahaf and Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid denied that the foreign ministers addressed holding a comprehensive Arab summit.
"The summit was never discussed; however, we are looking forward to a summit in which we hope all the Arab states will participate," he said.
Abdul Meguid said, "The summit is essential in the competence of the Arab leaders, presidents, and kings, but the Arab League's charter didn't discuss convening the summit contrary to the charter of the Organization of African Unity and the Organization of the Islamic Conference."
He added, "We have complete confidence in our leaders to hold the summit, and there are communications concerning convening a comprehensive summit without exception in the future, and not to discuss it doesn't mean that it was left out, but the success of the current session inspires hope and gives a strong push to the coming summit's success."
Al-Sahaf, suggested convening a meeting of the Arab officials with an open view to overcoming their problems and decreasing their stubbornness and obstinacy, as well as to give each his right today.
He also said the disputes will be reconciled, and each party will listen to the other because all need to meet.
