El-Baz: Sudan is the strategic depth of Egypt
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 9/14/1999
Osama El-Baz, the political advisor to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, stated that both Egypt and Sudan represent strategic depth for each other, and Egypt wants to maintain the unity of Sudan.
He added that Egypt and Libya reached a hope for reconciation between the Sudanese government and the opposition to set up a large coalition in the Sudanese government, not limited on one movement but with participation by all the Sudanese and represented by all the political parties and fronts.
In his meeting organized by the engineers syndicate in Alexandria yesterday, El-Baz said the meeting of the Arab League's ministerial council should be a chance for Arab reconciliation and contribute to the approach of Iraq to the Gulf's peoples and rulers to convince them that Baghdad hasn't any ambitions in any of the Gulf states, adding that there is a need to open a new page coinciding with the announcement of the destiny of the Kuwaiti detainees in Iraq.
Regarding the peace process, El-Baz affirmed Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's government's recognition of the importance of achieving peace with the Palestinians and establishing their state as well as the importance of living in peace for the good of the coming generations.
