Moussa: Kuwait, Saudi Arabia do not oppose lifting Iraqi embargo
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 9/14/1999
The 112th session of the Arab League council concluded on Monday in Cairo with optimism over the possibility of attaining Arab solidarity, especially as it was possible to avoid friction at the council between Iraq and Arab Gulf states like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Avoiding the two issues of the sanctions and the US-British attacks against the two "no-fly zones" in the northern and southern parts of Iraq resulted in not having points of dispute emerge inside the meeting.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Said al-Sahaf talked about the "several points of understanding" among the Arab states in order to lift the embargo imposed on Iraq. Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said that Saudi Arabia and Kuwait do not oppose lifting the sanctions imposed on Iraq.
SANA added in this respect that al-Sahaf stressed the several "points of understanding between the Arab states with the objective of lifting the embargo imposed by the UN on Iraq since 1990."
In a press conference he held on Monday night in Cairo after he presided over the meeting of the 112th session of the AL council, al-Sahaf said, "We are pleased by any Arab signal to lift the siege and welcome such positive states in order to build on it new prospects."
