Sudan, Politics, 9/13/1999
Sudanese sources said yesterday that Colonel John Garang, the leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army decided not to come to Egypt on October 2 as scheduled to participate in the meeting of the leaders of the Sudanese opposition Democratic National Alliance.
The sources added that Garang made a phone call on Saturday to Mohamed Othman El-Merghany, head of the DNA, as well as the chief of the Sudanese Democratic Unionist Party in which he suggested delaying the opposition leadership's meeting until the middle of the coming month.
He is to discuss at this meeting the results of the current mediation between the government and opposition in Sudan as well as the plans of the opposition group in the coming phase.
