Gulf states back Arab issues
Gulf, Politics, 9/13/1999

The foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council on Saturday expressed their backing for Syria's demands to resume peace negotiations from the point at which they broke off. The GCC ministers called on Israel to withdraw to the June 4, 1967 border lines from south Lebanon according to UN resolution 425.

At the conclusion of their two day deliberations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the GCC foreign ministers stressed in a final statement that peace in the Middle East is not attainable without restoring all Arab rights advocated by international legitimacy resolutions. They called on the US and Europe to continue efforts to help the resumption of peace talks on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks with the objective of achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region..

The GCC ministers also reiterated their demand to make the Middle East a zone free from nuclear weapons and called on Israel to sign the international non-proliferation treaty and to open its nuclear installations to international inspection.
