Amman is determined to arrest Hamas officials
Jordan, Politics, 9/13/1999

Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdeh stressed on Sunday that Jordan is determined to arrest the five officials in the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement against whom arrest warrants were released at the end of last month and not to permit any anti-Arab activities in its territories.

Al-Rawabdeh added, "One who wants to host an opposition organization against any Arab state in the Jordanian territories has to go to that country to oppose it."

He said, "Hamas is not the only Palestinian organization existing in the Jordanian arena, rather there are also the democratic and peoples fronts for the liberation of Palestine and others. And as a democratic country we do not oppose practice of political views. But if the matter changes to be an organizational operation, legal measures are taken against it."

Al-Rawabdeh did not explain what sort of organizational operations Hamas made, but Jordan's King Abdullah said in a statement issued on Thursday by the Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas that the Jordanian security forces found weapons at Hamas' offices.

Al-Rawabdeh said he met on Sunday with the general observer of the Muslim Brothers movement, Abdul Majid al-Zuneibat, as the movement is considered a legal "Jordanian organization which we always inform about our measures, reasons behind them, and we inspire from their views."
