British business delegation expected in Morocco on Sunday
Morocco-UK, Business, 9/10/1999

Representatives from eight British businesses will visit Morocco this September 12 to 18 to explore trade opportunities with Moroccan companies.

It is the first trade mission to Morocco sponsored by British Trade International which is a new trade and investment organization created to promote trade between Britain and the rest of the world.

A statement of the British embassy said the trade mission is part of the UK's drive to increase business with Morocco, "which with its growing prosperity and sound economic policies is increasingly seen by British businesses as an attractive market."

The textile and pharmaceutical industries are already important sectors which attract British investments, but there is potential for a lot more activity.

British Ambassador Anthony Layden says, "The most significant contribution Britain could make to Morocco's development and in particular to the employment situation is by directly creating more economic activity in Morocco through more trade and more investment."

The companies selected cover a whole range of sectors, from natural medicines and cosmetics to building, electronic, and steel products. The eight companies come from England and Wales and will be accompanied by Neville Breedon, an export development counselor from the northern area of Yorkshire.

Preliminary figures for 1998 show that the UK is the third largest destination for Morocco's exports, buying 9.5% of Morocco's exports. In 1998, Moroccan exports to the UK went up to $664 million (6,643 million dirhams). UK exports to Morocco maintained their high level, and totalled $533 million (5,335 million dirhams).

The UK has a larger share of the market in Morocco than in any other country in North Africa.
