Jordanian king, premier call for reviving Syrian-Israeli peace track
Jordan-Regional, Politics, 9/10/1999

Arab circles and the mass media have warned Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak against proceeding in ignoring the basic elements for a just and comprehensive peace. These circles voiced backing for Syria's stand, which calls for a comprehensive solution that provides for restoring usurped rights and lands.

In this respect, Jordan's King Abdullah has asserted that he will spare no efforts in backing "our brothers in Syria and Lebanon and siding with them so as to restore their territories and achieve a peace which helps the establishment of security and stability in this region."

During his meeting with Canadian Defense Minister Arthur Eggleton, the Jordanian king expressed his hope that Israel will be able very soon to achieve a breakthrough on the Syrian-Lebanese track by resuming these talks from the point at which they broke off.

King Abdullah and the Canadian minister reviewed bilateral relations and areas of cooperation between Jordan and Canada, especially in regard to defense cooperation and the exchange of military expertise.

Meanwhile, King Abdullah and the chief of staff of the British army, Charles Guthrie, discussed the Middle East peace process and the latest developments in this regard.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed fields of cooperation in the military fields and the joint training programs between the Jordanian armed forces and units from the British army.

For his part, the Jordanian prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdah asserted the importance of resuming negotiations on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks to serve the establishment of peace in the region.

In a similar meeting with the Canadian defense minister al-Rawabdah stressed Jordan's support for a just and comprehensive peace, the fruits of which will be harvested by peoples of the region following the completion of these talks on all tracks. He commended Canada's support for the Middle East peace process.
