Syrian officials meet with British parliamentary delegation
Syria-UK, Politics, 9/9/1999
The speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly (PA), Abdul Qader Qaddoura, on Wednesday received a British Parliamentary delegation led by Dr. Phyllis Starkey, a member of the British House of Commons.
Talks dealt with current conditions in the region, the Middle East peace process and the role played by the European Union in the peace process.
Qaddoura reviewed Syria's stand concerning the Middle East peace process, based on UN resolutions concerned and the importance of resuming the Middle East peace process on the basis of the Madrid Conference and from the point at which they broke off so as to ensure the implementation of UN resolutions and Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories from the whole of the Golan to the June 4, 1967 border line.
He underlined the role played by Europe in giving the Middle East peace a push forward. Qaddoura said that Syria "welcomes such a European role, and backs it, thanks to the common elements linking Europe to the region."
Later in the day, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa received the British parliamentary delegation.
Talks dealt with conditions in the region and the importance of revitalizing the European role in the Middle East peace process. Bilateral relations between Syria and Britain were also reviewed.
