Al-Sharaa confers with European Union Middle East peace envoy
Syria-European Union, Politics, 9/8/1999

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa met on Tuesday with the European Union's Middle East peace process special envoy, Miguel Moratinos, and members of his accompanying delegation.

The two sides discussed the European role in the Middle East peace process, Euro-Syrian relations and the importance of developing them in all areas.

Meanwhile, Moratinos said on Tuesday following his meeting with al-Sharaa: "My talks today with Foreign Minister al-Sharaa dealt with the peace process, especially on the Syrian track, following the recent visit made by US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to the region."

The EU Middle East peace envoy added, "I briefed al-Sharaa on the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement signed between the Israelis and the Palestinians. We also exchanged views on several other issues."

He added that he will continue his talks with US officials to continue efforts to resume talks on the Syrian track.
