Dubai attracts some 2.5 tourists annually
United Arab Emirates-Gulf, Economics, 9/8/1999

Dubai has become a source of tourism attraction, bringing in some 2.5 million tourists every year, most of them from the Gulf Cooperation Council sates.

In a report published recently in Dubai said the income deterioration in oil prices last year, which affected the economics of the region which have oil as a main income, had prompted many people in the area to search for a nearby place to spend their annual vacation.

The report said that Arabs of the Gulf region are now visiting the trade centres and the coast in Dubai, which seek to attract tourists within plans to diversify income sources.

An official in Dubai said the Gulf states have started to reconsider their financial conditions following the decrease in the oil world prices, despite the fact that oil prices have greatly improved during the past six months.

He added that rich Gulf families still travel abroad and families of less income stay in the country. He said school vacations last between two and three months, and spending a holiday in Europe and the US is very costly.
