ISESCO calls for fighting illiteracy

The Islamic Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has called for doubling efforts for fighting illiteracy on all its levels.

The organization's Secretary General Abdul Aziz Bin Othman al-Tweijari stressed in the statement he addressed to the Islamic world the importance of collective efforts in the course of programs and activities of bilateral and collective joint cooperation to exchange expertise and experience among the Islamic states to fight illiteracy.

He added that illiteracy average in the Arab states reached 45.5% and that this rate increases to 60.5% and even to 80% among women. he stated that half of the Islamic world population are almost suffering from illiteracy.

ISESCO's director general urged the Islamic states to consider the question of eradicating illiteracy and education for adults as one of the major causes that will determine the kind of future possible and that need collective efforts and taking responsible official decision is needed.
