Mubarak attacked yesterday among crowded hospitality in Port Said
Egypt, Politics, 9/7/1999
President Hosni Mubarak was driving in the streets of the Suez Canal city of Port Said yesterday, waving his hand outside the car window, when a man with a sharp weapon rushed Mubarak and caused a minor wound to him, an official source told ArabicNews.com.
Mubarak security guards acted promptly, killing the assailant.
Later, the interior minister identified the assailant as El-Sayed Hussein Soliman, a 40 year-old clothing merchant in the city's market, adding that the man, who was married with two daughters, was known for being impetuous. He had a criminal record for assault and theft and had been detained before.
Following his rescue yesterday from the attack in Port Said, 220 km east of Cairo, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is continuing his usual work from his presidential residence in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian judicial fronts assumed the investigation of this incident, as the Egyptian Ministry of Interior Affairs released an official statement confirming that there is no relation between the assailant and the extremist Islamic groups.
President Mubarak has been in power for 18 years and is set to be reelected this month for a new six-year term.
World leaders rushed to check on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's health after the attack.
