Israel to buy Turkish waters
Turkey-Israel, Economics, 9/7/1999

The Turkish Daily News said on Monday that an Israeli delegation including experts on water started on Monday talks with Turkish officials in Ankara with the objective of studying the possibility of Israel buying water from Turkey.

The paper added that the Israeli delegation, which is led by the deputy secretary of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Yuvin Beiran, will spend two days in Turkey, at the request of Turkish President Suleiman Demirel during his recent visit to Israel in order to become acquainted with areas of abundant water in Turkey.

The paper indicated that the Israeli delegation, which includes officials at the Israeli water planning commission, will meet during their visit with representatives from the Turkish government's water works commission and representatives of the economic department at the Turkish Foreign Ministry. It added that the Israeli delegation will visit the Managhwat district, which has abundant water, where both Turkey and Israel are intending to carry out joint water projects.

The paper quoted Israeli sources as saying in a statement that the visit of the Israeli delegation is an exploratory one as experts will find out the economic feasibility of buying water from Turkey as a first step, and the second step is whether water can be sold to other states.

The paper added that though the Israeli delegation visit's to the project of Southeastern Anadulia is not in the schedule of its visit, the director of the Turkish water works committee, Doghan al-Tanbelik, had earlier visited Israel and discussed with the Israeli officials joint projects at a cost of US $800 million concerning the al-Ghab project of Anadulia.
