Report: Jordan not considering integration with Syria and Lebanon
Jordan-Regional, Politics, 9/7/1999
The Jordanian weekly al-Majd said in its most recent issue that Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdeh last week summoned several Arab and foreign ministers accredited in Amman and informed them that the idea of tripartite integration between Jordan, Syria and Lebanon "has not been taken into Jordan's consideration," due to the fact that Jordan refuses the policy of "axis" and encourages bilateral relations between states.
The paper quoted al-Rawabdeh as saying to those ambassadors, including the Egyptian and Saudi ambassadors and the Syrian charge d'affairs that statements made by the Jordanian chief of the royal court, Abdul Karim al-Kabareiti, to al-Majd daily on tripartite integration do not reflect the real Jordanian policy adopted by the Cabinet, but views and ambitions concerning only al-Kabareiti, himself.
The paper added that al-Rawabdeh contacted King Abdullah II following his reading of al-Kabareiti's statements in al-Majd to consult with the king on this matter, but King Abdullah said the issue of tripartite integration is not scheduled on his agenda.
The Jordanian premier also told the ambassadors that he had the permission of the king to deny what had been said by al-Kabareiti in order to avoid provoking certain Arab states.
Al-Majd continued that al-Kabareiti, whose statements on the tripartite integration have won the backing and support of millions of Arabs, refused to comment on al-Rawabdah's denial of his statement to avoid media fights between the Jordanian government's members, and al-Kabareiti confined to saying.. Days are between us.
