Bouteflika: Everyone needs to forgive the mistakes of the past for the sake of Algeria's future
Algeria, Politics, 9/6/1999
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika called his people to forgive, in order to stop the riots and sedition that erupted more than seven years ago.
In a people's conference within his tour of the Algerian provinces Bouteflika said: "Yes, the authorities have done wrong, but this error doesn't justify the leader to decide the collective killing," describing this as meanness and baseness.
Bouteflika was referring to 1992, when the outcomes of the Algerian elections were abolished, so the leaders of the Islamic Salvation Front announced war against the state.
Bouteflika described the circumstances surrounding the application "the law of civil concord" as difficult to those who have suffered as a result of the killings and terror, but that their forgiveness expressed the genius of a people capable of doing the impossible.
He added that choosing reconciliation will help avoid more bloodshed and tragedies that Algeria had suffered before, and that if the leaders of terrorism choose to continue their way, the country is ready to confront them.
