Muslim Brothers in Jordan and the question of Hamas
Jordan, Politics, 9/6/1999

A gathering at the headquarters of the Muslim Brothers group in Jordan for political figures, parties and vocational trade unions held on Saturday in Amman criticized the measures taken by the Jordanian government against the Hamas movement and described them as "sudden and unjustified."

The gathering called on the Jordanian government to give up its measures against Jordanian citizens.

In a speech the general observer of the Muslim Brothers in Jordan, Abdul Mijuid Zneibat, said that Hamas' leadership in Jordan has no military or civilian organization in Jordan and only carries out political and media activities.

The participants in the meeting made several proposals. These included asking for a meeting with King Abdullah, maintaining a dialogue with the government and carrying out peace rallies and marches.

The participants also set up a committee to study the proposals made in the gathering to deal with the question of Hamas leadership. The committee is composed of Zuneibat; Hakim al-Fayez; the chairman of the Physicians Union, Saleh al-Armouti; the secretary general of the Islamic Labor Front party, Abdul Latif Oreibat; the secretary general of the Hashad Party, Salem al-Nahas; the secretary general of the Baath Arab Socialist Party in Iraq, Teiser al-Homsi; former Jordanian Engineers Union leader Leith Shbeilat; former Jordanian Bar Association chairman Hussein Majli; and lawyer Najib al-Rashdan.
