Signs of relaxation in Iraqi - Iranian relations
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 9/3/1999

Signs of relaxation have appeared yesterday in the relations between Iraq and Iran as talks are to resume on exchange of prisoners.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry directed a call to the undersecretary of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Mohammed Jawal Zarif to visit Baghdad within the few coming days so as to resume stumbling talks between the two sides on the files of captives and missing as a result of the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980s.

The chairman of the Iraqi side in the Iraqi - Iranian committee for prisoners and missing, Fahmi al-Qeisi, said that Baghdad is completely ready to resume talks at a time to be specified by the Iranian side.

Two sides decided hold a meeting this month to continue discussing the subject of exchanging the remains of the soldiers killed in the war between Iraq and Iran.

These contacts came at a time when the relations between the two countries are suffering great tensions due to mutual exchange of accusations on the support and shelter of opposition forces that exploded bombs leading to several victims.
