Morocco's industry, energy and mining perform well in 1999

Morocco's industry, energy and mining production made a good performance during the second three months of 1999, in comparison with the same period of 1998, according to the newsletter of the statistics department.
The production of industry recorded a 9 % growth between April and June 1999 and a 1 % increase was expected for the May-July period. This progression was mainly recorded in the industries of sugar, chocolate, beverages and tobacco, hosiery, shoes, processing of non-metal materials, agriculture equipment, vehicles, bikes and motorcycles and others.
According to the source, regression was reported in the manufacturing of textiles, leather industry, batteries, carpentry, paper industry and red bricks.
Meanwhile, executives of energy enterprises report a 12% progression in energy production in the period between March and May 1999, due to higher production in oil refineries (17% growth) and electric energy (5%), despite a 12% slump in coal.
For the period between July and September 1999, they forecast a 5% increase in mining output which they ascribe mainly to a 6% improvement in phosphates production.
Regarding mining, the publication reports a 5% growth in the first three months of 1999, due mainly to a 6% improvement of phosphates production. For the last three months of 1999, this upward tendency is expected to be maintained.
