Garang supports the Egyptian -Libyan initiative
Sudan, Politics, 9/2/1999

John Garang, the leader of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army confirmed in his support for the Egyptian - Libyan initiative, the Tripoli declaration of last August, and the Asmara declaration of the Sudanese opposition National Democratic Alliance of last June for a peaceful resolution to the Sudanese problem through the negotiations between Khartoum's government and the National Democratic Alliance to make a comprehensive and essential change for the good of the Sudanese people and to maintain the unity of the country.

In his statement to reporters before leaving Cairo yesterday following short visits to Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Cairo, Garang referred to the SPLM/A's belief in the legitimate interest of Egypt and Libya that confirms the importance of their role in solving the Sudanese problem.

Moreover, Garang said there is a lack of seriousness on the part of the Sudanese government in Khartoum, adding that it hasn't taken any serious steps to rectify the atmosphere to hold a dialogue with the National Democratic Alliance to achieve peace in Sudan.
