Turkey accepts Iraqi aid despite US views
Iraq-Turkey-USA, Politics, 9/1/1999
The Turkish daily Mellit said on Tuesday that Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has decided to accept Iraqi oil aid, despite US warnings that such aid constitutes a violation of the UN embargo imposed on Iraq.
The paper said that the Turkish premier approved the Iraqi oil which will increase to match the volume of the US aid to Turkey, despite the concern conveyed by the US ambassador in Ankara to the Turkish officials concerning this aid.
US State Department deputy spokesman James Foley said, "The United States is working with the UN Sanctions Committee to insure that diversion of humanitarian oil from Iraq to Turkey is made within the framework of U.S. sanctions on Iraq. That's the critical point: that the UN Sanctions Committee have an opportunity to look at this and, if necessary, to authorize this."
Mellit added that Iraq started on Monday pumping oil to Turkey worth an estimated US $10 million for free, to offer the highest level of aid rendered to Turkey in comparison with other coountries.
