US mediation to end Ethiopian - Eritrean row
Ethiopia-Eritrea-USA, Politics, 8/31/1999

Two high-ranking US officials have arrived in the Ethiopian capital in an attempt to put and end to the fighting between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

The US officials, Assistant Secretary of State Susan Rice and Anzr Rahbat, the US special envoy for the Great Lakes region, have conferred with the Ethiopian president.

Ethiopian sources said the meeting tackled means of applying peace plans proposed by the OAU on the basis that both parties would pull their troops back to their locations before the eruption of war between them in May 1998.

It has not been known yet, whether the US officials would head to Eritrea or not.
