Gaddafi calls for establishing African unity
Libya, Politics, 8/31/1999
Libyan leader Colonel Moammar Gaddafi stated that the establishment of an African United States is the historic solution for the continent, adding that his call to establish these states comes out of the will to build a new Africa and that his role in it could be a soldier to serve the continent for the causes of peace and development.
In press statements, Gaddafi said the Abuja agreement of 1991 established the African economic group, "Thus we have to work on applying this agreement and reviving the African Development Bank," adding that the existence a fund for African currencies can achieve an equal balance between African currencies, the European Union's euro and the Japanese yen.
In a statement yesterday to South African television Gaddafi expressed his belief that calling for Arab unity might contradict the idea of African unity, on the basis that this call could be explained by some countries of the continent as an effort to separate part of the north from rest of the continent's countries.
