Israeli figures set up committee to perpetuate memory of late King Hassan II
Morocco-Israel, Politics, 8/30/1999

A group of 70 Israeli figures has set up a "national committee for the perpetuation of the memory of King Hassan II," the committee's president, Sam Benchetrit, announced in a statement sent to MAP.

The committee was set up by 70 figures, the late king was 70 when he passed away last July 23. The members included ministers, representatives, rabbis, politicians, artists, writers and businessmen.

Its objective is to perpetuate the spiritual legacy of the late king of Morocco and pay tribute to his action in favor of Moroccan Jews and of peace in the Middle East, says the statement.

To mark the 40th day since the late king's decease, the committee will hold an event at the 3,000-seat Culture Palace under the theme "artists and public officials pay tribute to the memory of Hassan II."

Ministers, Shimon Peres, David Levy and Shlomo Ben-ami, former finance minister, Yossi Sarid, representative, Meir Chetrit and secretary general of the World Rally of Moroccan Jews Robert Assaraf will take the floor during this event that is sponsored by Israeli Premier Ehud Barak.

The committee has also decided to open a register for Israeli citizens wishing to express their admiration for the deceased sovereign.

An action will be undertaken with the Israeli authorities to name 70 squares, streets, parks, gardens and other sites after King Hassan II. The committee has also asked the telecom minister to issue a special stamp in memory of the late king of Morocco in 2000.

Meanwhile, the members will raise funds to build a dialysis center for Children in Casablanca as "a solidarity donation from the Israeli people to the Moroccan people."

The committee is also planning to hold an international symposium on "the historic" contribution of the late king to the peace process and on the "great king's" policy vis-a-vis Jews.
