AL welcomes closure of Burger King in the Israeli settlement
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 8/30/1999

The Arab league hailed the decision taken by the Burger King Corporation to close its restaurant in a West Bank Israeli settlement, near Jerusalem.

This decision came after the threats made by Arab and Islamic organizations to boycott the restaurants affiliated to the company.

Meanwhile, the assistant secretary general at the Arab League for international and political affairs, Mohammed Zakeria Ismael, said the AL welcomes this decision, adding that as long as the Arab states are united in solidarity it will achieve all its targets and that this event will call on the Western world and Israel to take into consideration that the settlements are occupied territories and not under Israeli sovereignty, so any decision issued by Israel will be a point of dispute.

Ismael said the decision taken by Burger King is a success for Arab solidarity, adding that the solidarity included not only governments, but non-governmental organizations as well.

Ismael said this subject has not been removed yet from the Arab foreign ministers' agenda on September 12, though it will be taken out after the approval of Palestine.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Sobieh, the AL's permanent Palestinian delegate, confirmed that the subject will still be raised in the agenda till the Palestinians are assured that the restaurant has been completely closed.
