Palestinian general command denies opposition split
Palestine, Politics, 8/30/1999

The assistant secretary general of the opposition People's Front-General Command, Talal Naji, stressed that Atif Yunis "has no relations with the front since 29 years" and that he was "expelled" from the front since the incidents "of Black September" in Jordan in 1970, because he escaped taking part in the fight and hid himself to escape that."

Naji told al-Hayat daily today that Yunis worked as a teacher in Algeria for 24 years before he returned at the beginning of the 1990s to Amman, Jordan, "to announce together with other five persons an organization under the name of the general command- national committees." He stated that the Palestinian Authority "is behind his new moves in order to give the impression that those who do not join it after the People's Front led by George Habash and the Democratic Front led by Nayef Hawatemah are either to be eliminated or partitioned."

Naji's statements came in response to a report by the Israeli daily Yadhout Ahrnout which said on Sunday that high-ranking officials in the People's Front-General Command, led by Ahmad Jibril, split from it to form a new group which will work in coordination with the Palestinian Authority.

Naji continued that those who split live in the Palestinian territories, Jordan and Lebanon and that the new group will be called the People's Front-General National Leadership, led by Atif Yunis.
