Israeli companies export illegally marked products in Jordanian markets
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 8/30/1999
The Jordanian daily al-Masa'eyah said that an Israeli investment company has started invasion of Jordanian markets by mineral waters bottles, in an agreement with a Jordanian company.
The paper quoted specialists as saying that the Israeli mineral water bottles are labeled "Made in Greece," and they were bottled in Israel and transported via ships to the Greek ports where they are prepared and labeled for re-export to Jordan.
The paper added that the company is now expanding its local markets starting in Amman to the southern and northern parts of Jordan to cover in the very near future all Jordanian areas.
Meanwhile, the paper added that Israeli sources with direct connections to the Israeli factories in the al-Hassan industrial city in the northern Jordanian city of Irbid denied reports that Israeli industries in Jordan are facing difficulties or obstacles.
The sources added that the Israeli factories that were established in Irbid four years ago are growing rapidly, asserting that the Jordanian labor forces in the Israeli factories are the best among the Jordanians, a matter which helps the Israeli companies compete in the market.
The paper said that Israel enjoys a remarkable position in the industrial area in Irbid in accordance with the agreements with the Jordanian side. It added that the agreement between the two sides states that factories in which the Israelis participate in at least 8% and produce in Irbid can export to the US according to the set conditions of the free trade zone, and the product in this case is exempted from customs fees.
The paper quoted Israeli industrialists as saying that their projects in Jordan are remarkable because wages are much lower than in Israel, a matter which helps competition in the market.
