Egypt-Oman, Politics, 8/30/1999

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Sultan Qaboos of Oman will hold a meeting on Saturday at Sharm El-Sheikh resort on the Red Sea, dealing with preparations for a pan-Arab summit and the results of current Arab contacts in this regard.

An Omani official source in Cairo said that there is a great Arab and Egyptian concern with this visit, pointing out that Mubarak - Qaboos summit would tackle the peace process in the Middle East, the developments of the situation in the Gulf and the situation in Iraq.

Diplomatic sources in Cairo said that Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and Omani Foreign Minister Youssef Bin Alawi will hold talks on the sidelines of the Mubarak - Qaboos summit, in the context of preparations for the meetings of the Arab foreign ministers to be held in Cairo on September 12, under the chairmanship of Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf.

Mubarak is expected to brief Sultan Qaboos on the results of current contacts on the Palestinian track to implement the Wye River agreement and to revive the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.

Several days ago, the Egyptian president stressed that contacts are underway to convene an Arab summit and called for convening periodic Arab summits.

The offical Omani source in added that they would also discuss economic and political cooperation between Egypt and Oman, bilateral relations, and Oman's support for the development projects Toshka and Sharak El-Tafriaa.
