The Egyptian president's political advisor, Osama El-Baz, denied that there is any Egyptian mediation between Israel and Syria. In press statements, El-Baz said Egypt does not arrange meetings between the two sides, pointing out that Egypt supports Syria's stance toward achieving a just and permanent peace through the decisions of international legitimacy, the Madrid terms of reference and the land-for-peace principal. El-Baz also stressed that Egypt can never provoke the Palestinians against peace as claimed by former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The volume of German investments in Egypt amounted to $250 million, according to official statistics from the German embassy in Cairo. The statistics also said that Germany is considered the second-largest exporter to Egypt after the USA. German exports to Egypt amounted to $1.4 billion 1998, in comparison to $1.1 billion in 1997, while Germany occupies the seventh place on the list of the countries importing from Egypt. Egyptian exports to Germany rose to $494 million in 1998 in comparison to $466 million in 1997.

The speaker of the Iraqi National Assembly, Sa'doun Hammadi began a visit to Pakistan yesterday, during which he is to discuss with Pakistani officials bilateral relations, the situation in Iraq in light of continuing UN sanctions and fighting in the "no-fly zones" as well as other issues of mutual concern, INA reported. Hammadi added that he will submit a draft agreement on parliamentary cooperation during the visit, the report said.

The Palestinian Hamas movement denounced yesterday the Palestinian Authority for detaining Hamas members in the West Bank. In its statement yesterday, the movement said that the arrest campaign only serves Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and it said Palestinian security bodies have detained 12 members of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
