Morocco and Spain cooperation contributed to happy ending of hijacking
Morocco, Local, 8/27/1999

The excellent cooperation between the Moroccan and Spanish security departments contributed to the happy-ending of the hijacking of the Moroccan airliner, Spanish media said on Thursday.

A Moroccan, presented as mentally-ill, armed with a toy pistol had forced on Wednesday evening a Moroccan airliner-- which was on scheduled flight from Casablanca to Tunis-- to divert its route to Barcelona (Spain). The hijacker, a 45-old farmer, had demanded the plane refuelling to fly to Frankfurt, but after negotiations he surrendered and let all passengers go unharmed.

All Spanish media comments have agreed that the perfect coordination between the Moroccan and Spanish competent bodies has allowed to follow closely the evolution of the situation and ensure the safety of passengers and crew.

As soon as the hijacking news was learnt, crisis cells were set up both in Morocco and Spain to draw up a diligent and judicious strategy to foil the hijacker schemes and ensure the passengers safety.

The efficient coordination and skill shown by the two countries competent services in dealing with the pirate, the reinforcement of security measures and safe evacuation of passengers....paved the way for a happy-ending of this adventure, Spanish media said.

The hijacker, who surrendered to Spanish police, will appear this Friday before a Spanish court.
