US opposes opening investigations into al-Shifaa factory bombing
Sudan-USA, Politics, 8/25/1999

The US has announced its opposition to UN investigations into the justification of the US bombardment by missiles of al-Shifaa medicinal factory in Khartoum. The investigations were requested by the Sudanese government.

US State Department deputy spokesman James Foley said that Washington is still convinced the factory has connections to Osama Bin Laden, who is held responsible by Washington for exploding its two embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, but Foley gave no evidence to prove such US convictions.

The US spokesman said the al-Shifaa factory was used for producing components of chemical weapons, or it was preparing to produce weapons as such.

He asserted that the US has evidence indicating that Bin Laden was trying to obtain chemical weapons and that the US found, secretly, traces of a chemical used in making VX nerve gas in the ground around the factory.

Last Wednesday Sudan called on the UN to send a fact-finding commission to al-Khartoum to investigate that al-Shefaa factory which was destroyed by US missiles one year before was not producing chemical weapons.
