On the agreement between Hawatemah and Arafat
Palestine, Politics, 8/25/1999
AFP said that the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine announced on Monday that the Palestinians will ask during final status negotiations for the right of the refugees of 1948 to return to their territories.
The leader of the DFLP, Nayef Hawatemah, said in a statement to the Qatari satellite station al-Jazira that this point falls in the context of the agreement he signed with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in Cairo on Monday.
He added that what has been reached was a political program that puts an end to "Oslo's step by step policy" and moves to comprehensive negotiations based on international legitimacy resolutions.
Hawatemah continued that these negotiations will be based on UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338, adding that UN General Assembly resolution 194 should also be dealt with to ensure the right of the refugees to return.
Hawatemah stressed that joint Palestinian national "terms of reference" will be formed to carry out the negotiations. He added that the agreement to be reached during negotiations with Israel should be implemented in one stage, "from A to Z."
