Libyan message to Chinese president
Libya-China, Politics, 8/25/1999

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Tuesday in Beijing received a message from his Libyan counterpart, Col. Moammar Gaddafi.

The Chinese news agency said the Libyan Foreign Minister Omar al-Muntasir on Tuesday concluded a visit to China during which he on Monday delivered the message to the Chinese president.

The Libyan official also met with his Chinese counterpart and discussed with him the decision of the Libyan government in last April to hand over the two Libyans suspected of being involved in the Lockerbie incident of 1988 to Holland to be tried in February 2000, in accordance with Scottish law.

Beijing, on the other hand, has not agreed to the sanctions imposed by the UN against Libya because of Lockerbie. Added to these Washington accuses Beijing of supplying Libya with weapons.

Beijing abstained from voting at the UN Security Council in April 1992 on the decision that provides for imposing sanctions on Libya.
