Israeli - Jordanian water committee to meet Wednesday
Jordan-Israel, Politics, 8/23/1999
The Jordanian - Israeli technical joint committee for water is due to hold a meeting on August 25 in Amman to follow up on the discussion of a Jordanian proposal concerning obtaining Jordan's share of water directly from El-Yarmouk river, instead of storing it in Tabaraya lake first.
Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation Kamal Mahadin said the Jordanian proposal aims at gauging the range of the Israeli government's cooperation in the area of water, adding that this matter does not affect the conditions of the peace agreement.
In press statements from Amman, Mahadin said application of this idea will be for a limited time that will not exceed two months, adding that Jordan thought about it, because the cost of water storage in Tabaraya lake and repumping it to King Abdullah canal will cost Jordan large financial sums, adding that this water will improve the quality of drinking water after merging it with Jordanian water and treating it.
