Algeria, Politics, 8/23/1999

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika began a house cleansing effort to rehabilitate Algeria from its past years of civil strife that have taken a toll on the social, political and economic potential of a country that is rich is human, natural and economic resources.

The Algerian president carried out a comprehensive and sudden change in the rulers of 47 governorates.

The decision to make the change did not affect the governor of the Algerian capital, Algiers.

An official Algerian statement said today that these changes come amid a comprehensive policy by the Algerian president to deal with administrative corruption and incompetence and search for officials who enjoy transparency and good character, adding that the new governors will be evaluated according to their qualifications, which will be decisive to restoring the state's image and authority.
