Morocco's king renews commitment for settling social problems
Morocco, Politics, 8/21/1999
King Mohammed VI renewed on Thursday will to endeavor for settling social problems and to grant particular attention to poorest social layers.
In a speech to the nation, the second since he took over the throne following the demise of his father, King Hassan II, last July 23, the king dealt with the issues of employment, the rural world, education, the status of women and disabled persons, stressing, however, that he has no magic wand to settle all these problems.
The King's speech, on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the revolution of the king and the people --marking the forced exile by French colonial authorities of the late king Mohammed V, recalled the importance that king Mohammed VI has been granting to social issues, when he was crown prince. He wondered how to achieve global development at a time the rural world is plunged in problems that force rural populations to abandon their land to live in the city. He imputed this situation to the absence of an integrated development strategy and to the lack of interest to housing and education.
The king also deplored the problem of unemployment that affects the Moroccan educated and skilled youth and prevents them from earning a living, ascribing the causes of employment to the lack of appropriate training that would enable Morocco's youth to show their competencies and secure them the command of knowledge.
For the king, Morocco cannot achieve progress and stability unless women enjoy their rights and be shielded against injustice and violence.
After he hailed the good level reached by women who are now competing with men, the king said it is necessary to guarantee them the rights secured by religion that puts them on an equal footing as men, and the rights that match their lofty mission and shield them against all forms of injustice and violence.
He also tackled the problems facing disabled persons while Islam is a religion of solidarity and mutual help and called for integrating persons suffering from disabilities in society.
"We do not hold a magic wand by which we claim to resolve all these problems and others, but we are firmly resolved to face them, with the help of God, the soonest with the means available," he insisted.
